The big innovations in crafting seem to be missing in WoW: Shadowlands. Optional reagents, targeted item level increases ... all of these are Shadowlands mechanics that have been touched and thrown around several times by the WoW makers during the alpha and beta. However, one new crafting feature seems set at the current time, less than two months before the Shadowlands release: relics of the past for blacksmiths, tailors and leatherworkers. What exactly do these relics, which are optional reagents to boot, do?

You will learn how to craft all the relics for each WoW expansion from the profession trainer. Source: buffed For a few resources from past expansions, such as Tailor's Runic Fabric from Classic times or Pandaria's Windwool Fabric, primitive heavy leather from Cataclysm's Leatherworker's Lair, or real iron ore from Warlords of Draenor, the Relics of the Past of various levels can be crafted. These relics increase the item level of a crafted item as well as the required hero level with which that item can be created. The following relics are currently available in the Shadowlands beta:

  • Relics of the Past I - sets the item level to 23 and the required level to 15.
  • Relics of the Past II - sets the item level to 33 and the required level to 25
  • Relics of the Past III - sets the item level to 43 and the required level to 35
  • Relics of the Past IV - sets the item level to 56 and the required level to 45
  • Relics of the Past V - sets the item level to 87 and the required level to 50

Note: The authors of WoW (buy now 14,99 € ) Head have pointed out these relics and ways to earn gold. Interesting: You can make the relics of any level from materials of any expansion. An example: our BfA tailor still has tons of spray fogged linen in his bag. With that, he can craft both Past I and II Relics (5 pieces of Linen per Relic), Past III Relics (6 pieces of Linen per Relic cast), Past IV Relics (6 pieces of Deep Sea Satin per Relic cast), and also Past V Relics (7 pieces of Deep Sea Satin per Relic cast). Or he uses the Shal'dore silk from the Devastated Isles, which he also still has lying around in tons. Or the magnificent hide from Draenor. As long as a character has learned relic crafting of a corresponding WoW expansion from the profession trainer, he can use the resources of his craft profession for the relics. Cool, that way you can get rid of old, dusty stuff.

Brown linen pants is one of the cheap items for WoW tailors with room for an optional reagent Source: buffed Back to making gold: By means of these relics of the past and old, cheaply made pieces of armor from past expansions, gold can be made quite legally. Beta players have found out that they have made a hefty profit with such items, whose level they have increased to 87 and which they have subsequently sold at the merchant. Let's stick with a tailor example we have from the current beta server (September 10, 2020):

We use the following raw materials - the prices are of course the merchant prices, not the dough you would invest in the auction house.

  • Linen cloth x 2 for a bale of linen cloth = 26 copper x 2 = 52 copper
  • Coarse thread x 1 = 8 copper (from the dealer)
  • Deep sea satin x 7 for relic of the past V = 18 copper x 7 = 1 silver 26 copper

Thus, using less than 2 silver, we produce one of the cheapest tailor items with a slot for an optional reagent, brown linen pants. In the following screenshots you can see how the merchant price changes depending on the relic used. So for an investment of a little gold or a little time spent farming some old crafting items, you'll get quite a bit of gold back!

]Due to the level squish, which of course also affects the items of every WoW expansion so far, almost all crafted armor items become low-level items - and can be upgraded accordingly with relics. Keep in mind that this is all still beta, and the system is still subject to change. But before you empty your pockets at the end of Battle for Azeroth and sell off the contents, you should at least wait until the pre-patch of Shadowlands before you clean out, at least as a blacksmith, leatherworker or tailor. You could otherwise lose cash gold.

Attention: By the way, the bug that the authors at WoWHead reported that you get almost 35,000 gold for an upgraded tuxedo jacket from the merchant has been fixed. Items of ordinary quality can no longer have an optional reagent added to them during crafting. However, you should first craft a Relic of the Past V and then look for products that cost little to craft AND bring a lot of gold from the merchant. Also, not all crafting products can be upgraded. So make sure to check your template collection before your gold rush.
