The dataminers of WoWhead.com are busy bringing all possible files for patch 9.2 of WoW Shadowlands to light. Zones of the new Zereth Mortis area are also already being shown through datamining. Near the new raid Mausoleum of the First, a particularly interesting item can be found floating above the ground in a column of blue light.

What is Frostmourne doing there?

Datamining finds usually have to be taken with a grain of salt, as it's not certain if found content will actually make it into the game that way. It looks like the developers are going to place an Easter Egg very close to the Mausoleum of the First, which is supposed to remind us of Arthas Menethil. The Gramblade of the Ex-Lich King (Frostmourne) is just floating around there.

Will we still see Arthas in Shadowlands?

WoW: The first afterlife short film - Bastion

The Shadowlands story deals with the current Lich King Bolvar and the afterlife of WoW. Therefore, before the expansion, many players assumed that we would see the late ex-Lich King Arthas again in some way - be it in Torghast or elsewhere. In Bastion's afterlife video (see above), Uther throws Arthas into the maw, but there is no sign of Arthas there.

By now we know that patch 9.2 of WoW Shadowlands will be the last major update and so far we haven't been able to deal with Arthas. An appearance would be a real delight for the fan service alone. Possibly it will remain only with the Frostmourne-Easter-Egg.

Or will we see Arthas in the Mausoleum of the First?

But there is still a possibility. The boss fights against Anduin and the Dungeon Master in the Mausoleum of the First raid already have a few allusions to Arthas. For example, the Dungeon Master has forged a Gram Blade for Anduin, and the first stage in the boss encounter is called Kingsmourne Hungers. "Frostmourne hungers" is the phrase Arthas says at the end of the WotLK video before the Icecrown Citadel is besieged.
Anduin will be one of the bosses in the Mausoleum of the First. Source: buffed The second phase is called Remnant of a Fallen King. Some players speculate that the remains could be Arthas' ... or just a corrupted version of Anduin after all. In this intermediate phase, Anduin uses several Death Knight abilities, two of which are familiar from the battle in Icecrown Citadel against Lich King Arthas

.

The dungeon master is the final boss in the Mausoleum of the First and also has an attack up his sleeve with Defile

, which Arthas uses in Icecrown Citadel.

So there is some overlap with Arthas in patch 9.2. What do you think, will the old Lich King still play a role in Shadowlands and Zereth Mortis respectively? Write us in the comments.
