Update September 7,
As of now, Shadowlands beta testers can examine the "nomalization" of all Legion artifact weapons into their respective weapon types. For example, Warlocks can now mog the Scythe of the Deadwind onto a staff, even when playing in the Destruction skill. Below you can find two screenshots.

Original news
In an interview at the beginning of July WoW's (buy now 14,99 € ) Lead Game Designer Morgan Day already hinted at it, now it becomes reality: Almost all templates of your artifact weapon can be transmogrified far away from your play style. In plain English, this means that artifact weapons are subject to the normal transmog rules of weapons and a template is not tied to the spec.
Paladins, for example, can now transmogrify their Ashbringer (two-handed sword) even if they carry a two-handed mace, for example, and Restoration Shamans may transmogrify the Doomhammer of the Amplifier playstyle in the main hand. Some rules have also been waived for the spec in question: Fire mages cannot mog their one-handed sword into the two-handed staff aluneth (arcane artifact weapon), but druids may freely choose their forms from the barber. Arcane mages, however, may. Incidentally, it is not possible to optically equip two-handed weapons with secondary hand items. Holy Paladins, for example, may not use a shield from the Protective Paladin in addition to their two-handed mace.
In addition, the rule that the matching offhand is created when an artifact weapon template is created has been removed. So main and offhand are now also freely selectable. This means that in the example of the Shaman, we can carry our Shaman's Hammer in the main hand and at the same time put on the Healer's Shield, which is actually put on at the same time as Sharas'dal Scepter of the Tides.
Instead of an extra tab for artifact weapons, you can find the special Legion weapons in part quite normally under the respective weapon type
.
However, as the developers mentioned in the interview, there will still be some restrictions. For example, it will not be possible for the survival hunter to go into battle with a ranged weapon of the other two specs.
The change has already been applied with the last build of the Shadowlands beta and can be tested by players with beta access.
