from June 11, 08:51:
Last night, Blizzard's developers revealed in the official forums which class changes they plan to play on the alpha servers of WoW: Shadowlands soon. As far as the shaman is concerned, so much is changing that many impressions from our alpha tests (see original article) are no longer relevant. But read for yourself:

One quick note before discussing the specific changes to each spec, Searing Totem is being removed as a baseline button to all Shaman. Searing Totem was brought back in Shadowlands with the intention of Totems being a cool and iconic part of the Shaman class, but without significant redesign to the button to give it mechanical interaction and feeling impactful to press, it wound up feeling like just another cooldown you had to manage that didn't have any excitement behind it.

Elemental Shaman:

  • Fulmination has been changed to be a guaranteed proc from Lightning Bolt and Lightning Bolt Overload.
  • Chain Lightning has been decoupled from Fulmination entirely, but still grants Seismic Thunder stacks.
  • Earthquake's base damage has been reduced significantly, but Seismic Thunder now also increases the damage of Earthquake for each stack of Seismic Thunder consumed when cast.
  • Fire Elemental's previous interaction with bonus Fulmination proc chance has been redesigned. While Fire Elemental is active, the period of Flame Shock is reduced, which increases the DPS of any active Flame Shock debuff and also increases the chance of gaining the Lava Surge effect. Additionally while Fire Elemental is active, any newly cast Flame Shock will have its Duration increased by 100%.
  • Lightning Shield will now grant the Shaman a charge of Fulmination when it deals damage to an enemy.
  • Echo of the Elements no longer grants a second charge of Healing Stream Totem for Elemental Shaman. This is more of a bug fix, but noting here as it is a moderate change to available utility of the Echo of the Elements talent. This talent is unchanged for Restoration.

The changes above should make Elemental Shaman feel quite a bit more control over what will happen as the result of pressing their abilities.

Enhancement Shaman Core Ability Changes:

  • Rockbiter has been removed from the spec.
** This is a big change we're trying out. Rockbiter in Shadowlands basically only serves as a GCD filler. With the removal of Maelstrom, and Flame Shock and Frost Shock becoming class-wide abilities that are also on a short cooldown to fill empty spots, there was a lot of competition in the ~6 sec cooldown space of available buttons. Without Maelstrom, Rockbiter didn't have any strong interaction with the rest of the Enhancement toolkit, and shock spells are much more iconic to Shaman. This is an experimental change, please try things out in combination with the changes below and let us know how things feel.
  • Lava Lash is now learned at level 11, down from level 22. Base cooldown increased to 18 sec (was 12 sec).
  • Lava Lash now gets upgraded at level 22 to have its cooldown reduced to 12 sec (was 18 sec)
  • Stormstrike's cooldown has been reduced to 7.5 sec (was 9 sec)
  • Maximum Maelstrom Weapon stacks have been increased from 5 to 10.
  • Each stack of Maelstrom Weapon now grants increased damage and/or healing to the abilities Maelstrom Weapon effects in addition to the cast time reduction.
  • Abilities that are altered by Maelstrom Weapon have had their baseline damage or healing values reduced.
  • Stormbringer no longer causes your next Stormstrike to not incur a cooldown.
  • Feral Spirits now grants one stack of Maelstrom Weapon immediately when pressed, and an additional 5 stacks over the duration of Feral Spirits.
  • Each target that you hit with Chain Lightning now both increases the damage of, and reduces the cooldown of your next Crash Lightning.
  • Windfury Totem radius increased from 12 to 30 yards.
  • Windfury Weapon and Flametongue Weapon no longer require you to click the button, then click a weapon on your character sheet. They automatically apply their effects to an appropriate equipped weapon.
  • Lightning Shield now has a 50% chance to grant you a stack of Maelstrom Weapon when it deals damage to an enemy.
  • Flame Shock and Frost Shock have their cooldowns shortened with your current Haste.

Enhancement Shaman Talent Changes:

  • Boulderfist (talent) has been redesigned and renamed to Lashing Flames (Passive). Lava Lash now increases the damage of your Flame Shock on the target by 100% for 12 sec.
  • Landslide (talent) has been redesigned and renamed to Stormfury (Passive). Each time Windfury Weapon activates, the cooldown of Stormstrike is reduced by 1 sec.
  • Hailstorm (talent) renamed to Cycle of the Elements.
  • Searing Assault (talent) redesigned and renamed to Hailstorm (Passive). Each stack of Maelstrom Weapon consumed increases the damage of your next Frost Shock by 50%, and causes your next Frost Shock to hit 1 additional target per stack of Maelstrom Weapon consumed. Maximum 5 stacks.
  • Overcharge (talent) redesigned and renamed to Fire Nova. 15 sec cooldown. Cause all of your Flame Shocks to erupt in flames, dealing Fire Damage to up to 6 targets near your Flame Shock targets.

The above changes to Enhancement Shaman are a lot to take in, but we feel that the combined list of changes will make your abilities feel like they have a purpose and interact with your toolkit in meaningful ways instead of just dealing damage.

Original news:
With the upcoming WoW expansion Shadowlands, the developers have decided to put more focus on the classes. In the case of the shaman, this will ensure that a large number of iconic spells end up in all three books in equal measure. But there are also some changes in the individual specializations of the elementalist. We will bring you up to date with the current alpha status in the following.

The Shaman in WoW: Shadowlands

Some changes in Shadowlands affect all three play styles of the Shaman:

  • Chain Heal, Chain Lightning Bolt, Totem of Healing Flow, Weapon of Flame Tongue, Flame Shock, Frost Shock, and Lightning Bolt Shield are now available to all three Shaman specializations.
  • Totem of Burning makes its comeback and also ends up in the spellbooks of all shamans.

Elemental Shaman in WoW: Shadowlands

First, here are the changes that all elemental shamans with Shadowlands need to be prepared for:

  • The resource Maelstrom will be removed. However, your important damage spells will not cost mana either. The blue bar will only empty when you use support spells like Chain Heal or Healing Surge.
  • Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning Bolt, as well as their overcharges, have a 50% chance of creating a stack of Discharge until a maximum of eight stacks is reached. Earth Shock (or the Elemental Strike talent) unloads all stacks of Discharge onto the target, causing it to take additional Nature damage. When your Fire Elemental is active, the chance of Discharge stacks is 100%.
  • Each time Chain Lightning Strike hits more than one target, the cast time of your next use of Earthquake is reduced by 20% by the Seismic Thunder effect. Stacks up to five times.
  • The Call of Thunder talent no longer makes sense without Maelstrom and is replaced with Resounding Shock: With the new spell, you deal elemental damage and create an Echo of Ancestors. The echo causes a second cast of a damage or healing spell to occur for free one second after your next use of the spell.
  • Aftershock has been changed to grant a chance for Earth Shock to not consume Discharge stacks and Earthquake to not consume Seismic Thunder stacks.
  • Totem of Resonance from Totemic Mastery no longer generates Maelstrom, but instead generates a Discharge stack every five seconds.
  • The new version of the talent Power Suck lets you boost the next use of an ability within 15 seconds after consuming at least six stacks of Discharge : Flame Shock occupies an additional target within eight meters of the target with Flame Shock; Lightning Bolt triggers one to three additional elemental overcharges; Lava Eruption reduces the cooldown of Fire Elemental by six seconds; Frost Shock freezes the target in place for six seconds.
  • Spiritwalker's Favor is now available to elemental shamans and lets you cast your shaman spells for 15 seconds while running.

Although the developers cut the most important resource in Maelstrom, the elemental shaman in Shadowlands feels surprisingly familiar at first glance: You'll spread Flame Shock on your enemies, cast Lava Eruption as often as possible, and fill in the gaps in your rotation with Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning Bolt until you can sprinkle in an improved version of Earth Shock or Earthquake. Most of the BfA-era talents remain as well.

At second glance, however, the improvements catch the eye: the playstyle feels much more flexible. You don't have to watch out for Maelstrom, early use of Earth Shock and Earthquake is possible at any time, and in general you now have a broader arsenal of abilities at your disposal. In addition, movement-intensive battles are now easier to manage with the Spirit Shifter's favor. We would also like to positively highlight the new talent Reverberating Shock. It is now possible to copy the spell Elemental Strike and thus receive the corresponding buff twice. The only thing we find unfortunate at the moment is that the Elemental playstyle has zero synergy effects with the Totem of Combustion so far. In the current version, this ability only provides slightly more fire damage over the next 15 seconds. Boring!

Reinforcement Shamans in WoW: Shadowlands

A lot is also changing for the Reinforcer with Shadowlands

:

  • As with Elemental, Blizzard has removed the resource Maelstrom from the Melee Shaman. You also only have to worry about mana to a limited extent, such as when you want to heal teammates, remove curses, or activate Battle Frenzy.
  • Instead, your main attacks like Rock Biter, Lava Whip, Storm Strike, and Flame Shock trigger short cooldowns. Melee attacks have a chance to gain the Weapon of Maelstrom effect, which reduces the casting time of your next damage and healing spell by 20 percent per stack.
  • You can re-enchant your weapons with Weapon of Flame Tongue (attacks deal additional fire damage) or Weapon of Wind Wrath (chance to deal additional attacks).
  • The Totem of Wind Wrath also returns, giving party members a chance to strike again after automatic attacks.
  • There's a lot going on in the talent matrix. Elemental Strike takes the place of Lightning Bolt Shield , which is now part of the standard repertoire. Powerful Winds significantly increases Wind Wrath's damage within 15 seconds through Wind Wrath attacks, and Hot Hand and Weapon of Flame Tongue give automatic attacks a chance to reduce Lava Whip 's cooldown by 75 percent and increase the attack's damage by 100 percent. Totem of Resonance from Totem Mastery, in turn, increases your speed by two percent. The revised Overcharge talent immediately creates five stacks of Weapon of Maelstrom, plus one more stack every second for ten seconds. And Wrath of Air is removed. Taking its place is Stormkeeper, which makes your next two uses of Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning Bol t deal 150 percent more damage and become spontaneous spells. In addition, Incendiary Attack is now converted into an actively usable spell that lets you deal fire damage and boosts Incineration Totem and Flame Shock over the next ten seconds. And with the Hailstorm talent, Storm Strike completes the cooldown of the Shock spells.

So the buff's new playstyle revolves around knocking out the various attacks with cooldowns once they're already, and otherwise tormenting the enemy with automatic strikes, with Totem of Wind Wrath and Weapon of Wind Wrath always providing extra hits. Through these melee attacks, you then build up Weapon of Maelstrom, and once you have five stacks of the effect, you'll cast an instant cast Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning, depending on how many targets you're fighting. Or you can pack the Elemental Strike talent and sprinkle it in repeatedly as a spontaneous spell.

This already feels very coherent in the test, especially since you have various options in the talent matrix to change the priorities within your play style. For example, regular use of Totem of Incineration is especially worthwhile if you pack the retreaded Incendiary Attack. You can also use Weapon of Flame Tongue instead of Weapon of Maelstrom, and select the Hot Hand talent to significantly boost your Lava Whip. Want to deal some serious burst damage? Activate the Stormkeeper talent, build up five stacks of Maelstrom Weapon with Overcharge, hurl an instant Elemental Strike at your victim, and follow it up with two boosted Lightning Strikes. We're really enjoying the buff in Shadowlands!

Restoration Shaman in WoW: Shadowlands

So far, not much has changed with the Restoration Shaman in the alpha, but read for yourself :

  • Earth Shield is now part of the healing shaman's base arsenal. The vacated place in the matrix is taken by Woge of Earth. The spontaneous spell has a 20 second cooldown and uses up to three charges of Earth Shield to heal up to six nearby allies.
  • Totem of Mana Flood is back and once again provides a significantly increased mana regeneration rate for your team at the press of a button. It has a short range of 15 meters, but the effect stacks with other Totems of the Man a Flood or mana regeneration effects.
  • Strengthen yourself with Water Shield to increase your mana regeneration. When melee attacks hit you, you gain more mana points. You can only strengthen yourself with one shield spell at a time.

All of the Shaman's heals have shifted mana costs and stats, but that's thanks to the level squeeze again. Meanwhile, little has changed in terms of the basic gameplay and healing arsenal. The return of Water Shield and Totem of Mana Flood are great, as is the fact that Earth Shield is now a base spell and you have more ways to deal damage. Add in the new Woge of Earth, which converts charges from Erschild to a group heal, and there are more things for rebuilders to keep an eye on. But don't expect any major changes.
