World of Warcraft is a symphonic masterpiece that has accompanied my entire (video game) life. Challenges have been mastered, successes celebrated. The
human factor has always been at the center for me, because it is not only an extremely unique, but also an ambivalent variable in the life of every (MMORPG) player. I have experienced some patches that would not have been worth playing in terms of content. But at the end of the day, the social environment always kept me happy - because what could be better than hunting for loot with (real-life) friends?
The human factor
In my opinion, the "human factor" is what makes video games in general and World of Warcraft (buy now € 14.99) in particular worth playing. Whenever friends, acquaintances or family members sought their salvation in Azeroth: I was there. Whenever a small "real life" guild was founded, I was there: I was there.
Theadventures experienced together also caused discussions, laughter and (rant) tirades outside of the virtual worlds. In my early days in WoW, they saw themselves as the polar star of a fragile complex called puberty. In short: The daily login was always an event that was eagerly awaited.
WoW as "fun for the whole family
But what am I actually getting at? When I was scrolling through my Reddit feed a few weeks ago, I immediately noticed a very special post that couldn't have conveyed the feeling I described earlier more aptly: "Family WoW Time".
Family WoW time. I got my wife and kids into wow while on lockdown. We have been clearing every dungeon with just our family group. It's the best way to past the time together! from r/wowThe father of a (small) family proudly reported that he was able to "kidnap" his loved ones to Azeroth during the Corona lockdown. He described the feeling of the children rushing in as soon as the word "dungeon" was mentioned, and
even though his offspring is probably still too young to fully understand the complex mechanics of an MMORPG, it simply feels "great" and he enjoys every second of their adventures together
.About past disappointments
Why this little story touched me so much? Because it conveys this one central desire of my 15-year-old self: Constructive engagement with new media and participation in it on the part of parents.
When we, my brother and I, gave our father an introduction to "World of Warcraft" in 2006, he couldn't have been more disinterested at the time. Yet, at the end of the day, we were just two kids, striving for attention. For recognition. Appreciation. After a joint activity. Who knows - maybe then he would have led us on our Sunday hike in the Barrens hills?
Sharing makes life more beautiful
Granted: This train left the station a long time ago. But as has become apparent over the past few years, we can now both share our passion with our respective lady of the heart.
Even if I haven't yet been able to whisk my love away to Azeroth, we at least visit our respective islands in Animal Crossing or work on our shared farm in Stardew Valley. And who knows - maybe someday we can pass that fire on to the next generation?
What about you guys?
Have you had similar experiences? Are you currently able to share your greatest passion - which doesn't necessarily have to do with video games or World of Warcraft - with your loved ones? Let me know your story - I'm looking forward to it!
